Fires have been burning across the region and their smoke has reached 17 million people, prompting health authorities to issue an advisory regarding smoke exposure.

On Tuesday (September 9), the Apollo Fire began in a neighborhood approximately 30 miles west of Lancaster and quickly spread through 800 acres in just under 24 hours.

California Fire Arsonist

One of the largest California fires of 2023 was started by piles of green waste which spontaneously ignited. Unfortunately, this is an ongoing issue in Antelope Valley.

Justin Wayne Halstenberg, 34 years old and employed as a contract delivery driver was charged with starting the Line Fire on Tuesday afternoon after authorities utilized automatic license plate readers to detect his vehicle near its site of occurrence.

Cal Fire estimates that 10-12% of California wildfires are started intentionally. Arsonists are believed to be behind about 10-15% of these fires, including Park Fire which scorched thousands of acres in Northern California. One suspect who may have started this inferno had an extensive criminal background and even participated in rehabilitation program for inebriated firefighters in jail.

Northern California Fires

California’s fire season typically runs from June through October; however, due to climate change the flames have started earlier and become more intense this year. Wildfires have already torn through communities from Los Angeles to San Francisco this season.

Santa Ana winds have played a pivotal role in fanning these fires across California, spreading flames through communities such as Pacific Palisades and Studio City in Los Angeles County.

Evacuees in Malibu were caught up in stop-and-go traffic as they tried to escape the flames on Tuesday, as Actor James Woods posted videos to X of his area being consumed by flames; other residents described their experience as being similar to “an apocalypse.” Furthermore, this fire has damaged or destroyed several homes within Malibu.
