According to a new national poll released ahead of Election Day, Kamala Harris holds a double-digit lead over Donald Trump poll among likely voters and is making progress among Black voters and expanding her lead with independents.

Harris is making headway as Democratic enthusiasm surges ahead of November elections, with voters showing more interest in Democratic politics than Republicans. But she faces an uphill battle compared with Donald Trump who enjoys strong support among white voters who make up approximately half of the electorate.

Harris has managed to gain ground against Trump despite the former president’s considerable support among white voters, as evidenced by her growing support among women and minorities. A recent Times/Siena poll indicates this trend – independent women preferring Harris over Trump by an overwhelming margin, up significantly from her 5-point lead she held previously (in September). Meanwhile, Trump continues to retain male voter support at stable levels.

The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll also demonstrated that Harris held an advantage among black and Hispanic likely voters, with 83% favoring her respectively. She also held an advantage among voters under 30, with 74% favoring her over Trump.

Additionally, the survey found that voters tended to believe Harris would do a better job than Trump on several key issues and presidential qualities, including handling the economy, preventing domestic terrorist attacks and handling Israel-Hamas conflicts. She had only a marginal edge over Trump on who best represents change.

Kamala Harris of California holds a 3-point edge over President Trump in head-to-head matchups, and an expanded ballot that includes third parties. The survey conducted from October 4-8 polled 1,000 registered voters nationwide and has an error margin of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

This year’s Harris-Trump race is emblematic of the stark political divide which has defined this year’s campaign season: Republicans are more enthusiastic in support for their candidates while Democrats appear less so. Yet both candidates seek to expand their coalitions while Harris has taken measures to repair fractures within her party coalition.

Independent voters now favor Harris, with this group favoring her by three percentage points (53%-47%). Harris excels among women and minorities as well as young voters without college degrees, giving her an edge among independents.

Trump continues to fare well among rural and town voters due to his message of economic opportunity and claim that immigrants bring crime into America. According to an Iowa poll however, Harris is closing the gap with Trump; voters in rural areas and towns now prefer Harris by larger margins while voters aged 65 or older still prefer Trump by smaller ones.

As the race for president reaches its climax, former President Donald Trump has conceded a polling lead to Senator Kamala Harris. According to an NBC News poll conducted recently, Harris now outpaces Trump by five points among registered voters.

The NBC News poll also shows that voters view Harris more positively now than they did back in July when 32% saw her in a favorable light versus 50% with negative sentiment towards her.

Now, 48% of voters view Harris positively and just 37% view her negatively, due mainly to an upsurge in support from independent voters who now prefer her over Trump by an overwhelming margin. Within three months, this gap between these groups has shrunk from 15 points down to 11 points.

Harris still faces significant obstacles in her effort to unseat Trump. While polls provide an overview of voter sentiment, presidential elections are decided by state Electoral College votes; Harris must secure support in states won by Hillary Clinton in 2016, such as Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina and Michigan; she will also need to compete for traditionally conservative states like Pennsylvania.

Harris leads Trump in head-to-head comparisons among registered voters by 3 points on a standard ballot test and 2 points in an expanded test that incorporates other factors, which represents a dramatic turnaround since Biden exited. She continues to hold significant advantages among Black voters, women voters aged 18-34 and voters without college degrees; these voters trust Harris more with managing economic and social programs such as Medicare Social Security and abortion than Trump does.

Harris now holds a lead among independent voters 47%-35% with more independent women supporting her than men. Furthermore, senior voters aged 65 or above support Harris more strongly with 63% choosing her over 28% who favor Trump.

The new NBC News poll also finds that more voters see Harris as someone who stands for change than Donald Trump, but her campaign still needs to convince them she can deliver on her promises. Harris has an effective ground game with thousands of volunteers ready to make door-to-door calls and make phone calls; additionally, they have invested heavily in data analytics as well as high-profile endorsements.
