Arizona Republican Sen. Kari Lake is running to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema in the Senate. She has made provocative claims, trying to block children from receiving the coronavirus vaccine, and is a controversial figure in the Arizona Republican party.

Lake’s election conspiracy theories prompted Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer to sue her for defamation and is now proceeding towards trial to determine damages awarded in this matter.

How did she get into politics?

Arizonans knew Kari Lake as an anchor on local television news for decades, making her an instantly recognizable face in Arizona. She held numerous high-level interviews with Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump–the apex of any journalist’s career–and was widely popular within her local Phoenix community. Yet in 2021 she abruptly abandoned journalism by declaring it dead and turning toward populist right wing politics instead. She began sharing conservative political opinions online and even faced opposition from Fox 10 management, who labeled her as their “worst nightmare,” before expressing these views on social media.

She made a formal entry into politics by winning the Republican nomination in a tight race for governor in 2022 but ultimately losing to Katie Hobbs of Democratic affiliation. Lake later filed paperwork against Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego who has presented their contest as one of authenticity. She accused Gallego of engaging in an “extreme makeover” to minimize his progressive record in Congress and associate him with disorder on the U.S-Mexico border.

Lake disputes in courts the claim that she won the 2022 election without presenting evidence, despite warnings from many Republicans against making such claims. She has backed numerous candidates and causes related to Donald Trump while simultaneously criticizing media she once praised as “worst fricking hell.” Additionally, Lake has advocated for restrictions on abortion as well as attacked “woke school curriculum” – vowing that she’ll block vaccine mandates.

What is her platform?

Lake has made headlines for her high-strung rhetoric with the media and attacks against “woke” school curriculum as well as promises to block vaccine mandates – all hallmarks of conservative agenda. A political novice when she entered Arizona’s 2022 gubernatorial race, Lake has since emerged as one of its most formidable and controversial Republican candidates.

She lists border security as her top priority, supporting Governor Doug Ducey’s plan to bus asylum seekers away from Yuma and toward Washington. Lake endorses floods of law enforcement along the border and invokes an untested legal theory, suggesting that states can repel an invasion even when federal officials fail. On abortion issues, she has changed her position slightly. She previously supported bans on abortion before Roe v. Wade but now only intends to enforce such bans in cases of rape or incest.

People familiar with the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s strategy say it hasn’t ruled out endorsing Lake, according to sources who know their plans. That could open up key funding streams and signal to donors that she has the backing of top Republicans for an important primary race that could decide control of the Senate. But Lake’s allegiance to President Donald Trump, her combativeness with perceived enemies and refusal to let go of election fraud claims that have since been proven false is worrying some Republican insiders who worry that Lake’s intransigence will alienate swing voters from voting and control of Senate.

Who’s running against her ?

Kari Lake has launched a bid for the US Senate seat in Arizona after her unsuccessful run for governor in 2020. Since 2020, Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego is expected to face a challenging primary in Arizona. A Republican is expected to ease through the nomination process against him, given that Joe Biden won here and Democrats made significant gains in gubernatorial races.

Some Republicans express concern that Lake, with her MAGA-themed rhetoric, could alienate moderate voters essential for winning statewide in Arizona. She has been giving her support to President Donald Trump and the Republican establishment. However, there are accusations that she backs far-right fringe groups and spreads false allegations of election fraud.

Many Republicans remain undecided whether to support Lake, despite her efforts to tone down her more controversial views in a state largely dominated by Democrats. Her biggest flaw lies in her support for an abortion ban that bans near-term terminations as well as IVF technology use.

Gallego, on the other hand, is an ex-Marine Corps officer lauded by both law enforcement officials and conservative activists alike. Additionally, he’s supported by the Arizona Police Association, an organization which recently disfavored Lake for her support of President Trump but praised Gallego for his work securing funding for law enforcement both locally and nationwide – potentially making him more appealing to a wide array of voters in Arizona.

What is her record?

Former Fox 10 news anchor Elizabeth Edwards is known for pushing far-right conspiracy theories and Big Lie propaganda. She filed suit to overturn Arizona election laws and champions “voter fraud.”

Lake was an early advocate for federal legislation to prohibit abortion when fetal heartbeat detection could be detected; she later modified this position multiple times; during her 2022 gubernatorial campaign, she supported Arizona’s territorial-era near-total ban while later saying such matters should be left up to individual states.

During her campaign, she attacked Democratic U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego for his progressive record in Congress and support of “abortion on demand.” Additionally, she claimed she was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association before 2021 but could not provide proof.
