New Year’s Day Snow Forecast For Upstate New York
An impending winter storm snow is anticipated to dump an expanse of plowing-friendly snow across the Midwest and Plains regions, while New York City metro area residents may only see light accumulation.
Travel is expected to be difficult or impossible in Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Cayuga and Oneida counties located in the Southern Tier and western New York until Saturday.
Lake Effect Snow Warning
New Year’s Day promises to bring heavy lake effect snowfall across parts of Upstate New York, according to the National Weather Service. Travel will likely become difficult on secondary and rural roads. Wind will scatter light fluffy snow across roads further reducing visibility and making driving conditions even worse.
The storm is expected to arrive this afternoon and continue through Sunday, with heavy snowfall near Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, including Tug Hill in Oneida County and Oswego Counties, expected to receive 3 feet by its conclusion.
Other areas downwind of the lakes should also expect heavy snowfall, though less than 2 feet is likely. Snow will fall at variable rates; with several hours of heavy accumulation followed by several periods of lighter accumulation. Changes in wind direction and physical geography will determine who receives the heaviest accumulation, so those planning outdoor activities or commutes on Monday should postpone them to prevent possible hazards during their commutes.

Winter Storm Snow Forecast Storm Warning News
New York City may experience its first winter storm this weekend, creating hazardous driving conditions on Monday’s morning commute. Due to disruptions in the polar vortex, frigid Arctic air could mix with precipitation systems resulting in hazardous driving conditions for commuters.
It appears a wintry mix will occur, with accumulations ranging from several inches in the lower Hudson Valley to up to one foot across Catskills and northern Connecticut. Due to dry air in New York City and suburbs, however, snow totals may only accumulate by up to an inch or two.
Weather events typically weaken upon crossing the Appalachians, yet still produce snowfall from northern Kansas through eastern Missouri, southern Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for much of the region on Sunday evening. A warning indicates significant travel impacts with potential power outages and wind chill temperatures below zero; any snow threat should begin occurring overnight through Monday morning/afternoon before dissipating later that day.

Major Winter Storm Expected Friday Into Saturday
The National Weather Service has become increasingly confident that a major winter storm will strike over central America this week. A large stripe of snow and ice is forecast to extend from eastern Kansas through Missouri and Illinois valleys and Ohio-Tennessee rivers; heavy lake-enhanced snow could potentially fall downwind of Great Lakes regions.
At least a foot of snow could accumulate across parts of the Midwest and Ohio River valleys, with higher amounts possible in isolated cases. Dangerous ice could form as snow turns to rain before freezing again as rain. Power lines could also become vulnerable due to potential power line disruption caused by this climate event.
AccuWeather predicts the New York City metro area may see up to an inch of snow, which should not cause major issues for Monday’s morning commute. Unfortunately, however, cold Arctic air will set into motion below-normal temperatures which will last well into December causing road crews to work extra hard clearing away slippery conditions that might hinder driving conditions.
New York Snow Farmers Almanac Winter 2024-2025
New Yorkers can look forward to an enjoyable winter this year. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac’s 2024-2025 winter forecast, New England and Northeast residents can anticipate a milder, milder season; but that doesn’t mean snow blowers or skis have been packed away just yet!
The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a colder winter in the Great Lakes region, with “shots of very cold air” expected during mid-December, early January, and late February. New England and Northeast are forecast to experience normal snowfall levels while Southeast and Southern Plains regions should remain cool but dry.
Upstate New York is projected to remain on the fringes of these patterns, experiencing both rain and snow in equal measures. Albany area and Catskills will receive above-normal precipitation while New York City and Long Island should experience near normal temperatures; this contrasts with last winter, when Old Farmer’s Almanac predicted an unusually wet winter whirlwind for New York State.
Boston East Coast Snow Storm
Region is currently being hit with a severe winter storm that will bring major travel disruptions and potentially hazardous wind chills. AccuWeather meteorologists predict it could produce enough snowfall to surpass Boston area record set back in 2003 for single winter storm.
This storm is projected to drop over one foot of snow in some regions of western Massachusetts and eastern Connecticut, as well as bring heavy winds of 83 mph on Cape Cod and up to 45 mph in Boston metro, according to National Weather Service forecasts.
Some locations could receive up to two feet of snow in some locations, which will likely be wet and heavy – adding significant weight to tree branches and power lines and possibly leading to widespread power outages. As a precautionary measure, the National Weather Service issued winter storm watches across eastern states from mid-Atlantic through New England valid Friday night through Sunday; snowfall totals may reach 8 inches across New York City metro area, northern New Jersey and northeastern Pennsylvania respectively.
